Died With Christ Children’s Lesson

Memory Verse: Christ’s love controls us. We are sure that One Person died for everyone. And so everyone died. 2 Corinthians 5:14

As I go through the lesson, I have printed up the Scriptures in large print on a piece of paper and I hold them up and let the children read them together. I do this after a child has read from their Bible, so that all the children get the impact of seeing the Scriptures. I am using a children’s NIV version, unless otherwise noted. The Scriptures seem simpler for the children to understand.

Let’s begin by refreshing our minds about last week’s lesson. Last week what did we learn?

Answer: That we were crucified with Christ.

Who knows their memory verse from last week? (I am using an attendance chart that does not say ‘attendance chart’ on it, to place a cross sticker under each child’s name when they have learned their memory verses. The children who have learned all of their memory verses at the end of this series, will be the ones who choose what celebration activity the whole class gets to do for studying so hard during these lessons. We found the children weren’t thrilled when we started the class at needing to study the Scriptures.)

Have the children say their memory verse from last week one by one.

How many remember where we get the Six Steps from? Answer: King Solomon’s temple. Have a child read 1 Kings 10:18-19

Where else did we see the Six Steps in the Old Testament? Answer: The tabernacle of Moses on the Shewbread table.

Have the children explain what the two stacks of bread meant.

Very good! Now today we are going to learn that we have died with Christ. Everyone look at the Memory Verse board and let’s read our Memory Verse together.

How does Christ’s love control us? (Discussion forum).

Now when we speak of us dying in Christ, are we talking about who we are now? Answer: No, we are talking about the Old Man. Who we were in Adam, or the nature of Adam in us.

Who can tell me what the difference is between the Old Man and the New Man? Have the children describe what a person behaves like if they are not born again, and then what changes happen to someone who gives their life to Jesus.

The Old Man is who we used to be before we accepted Jesus into our hearts. Now we are a New Creation in Christ Jesus.

Have a child read 2 Corinthians 5:17

In the Bible, God deals with two men. Adam and Christ. Old Man and New Man. We are either in one or the other. What makes us be in One or the Other? Answer: What we believe. If we believe Jesus is the Son of God and we have accepted Him into our hearts, we have become One with Him, and we are living out of our New Man. But if we do not believe Jesus is the Son of God and have not accepted Him into our hearts, then we are living out of our Old man and that means we are living out of our flesh and we are in spiritual darkness.

Allow the children to ask questions. I have found that in their questions they take in spiritual truths that greatly impact them.

How did we become One with Jesus? Have a child read Romans 6:5

I used the Amplified Bible for this Scripture.

So the answer is that we shared Christ’s death.

We are now learning that we live out of our New Man. But how many know that we still sometimes do things that Jesus wouldn’t do? Does that make any difference in how God sees us? Answer: No. He loves us no matter what. But God did say something in the Bible that is important for us to learn how to live out of our New Man. He said we need to have our minds renewed. Does anyone know what that means?

It means to make new. God is telling us that we need to have new thoughts about things. We read our Bibles to hear what God is saying to us, and that changes us on the inside.

Why do you think it is important for us to understand that we have been crucified with Christ, and that we have died with Christ? Answer: Because the more we look at the death of Christ, the more we see the death of our Old Man. The more we see of our Old Man’s death, the less of his nature we have in us. That means the things we do that aren’t so nice and aren’t something Jesus would do, happen less and less. Do you know what those things are called? Answer: sin. But when we were crucified and died with Christ, the power of sin was destroyed in our lives. Read Romans 6:6-8

We now live with Christ Jesus, in Christ Jesus and He lives inside of you. This week I want you to think about how Jesus went to the cross and because He drew you into Himself, your Old Man was crucified and then when Jesus died spiritually, He took the spiritual death of your Old Man. I want you to think about the New Man that lives inside of you.

Break for Praise & Worship and Puppet Skit.

What did Jenny May learn today?

Yes, she learned she died with Christ. Jenny May also learned that God reconciled the whole world. Does anyone remember what reconciling means? Answer: something that is separated and put back together.

Would someone like to tell me what they learned today? Allow the children time to answer and voice their thoughts.

Have all the children read one more time the memory verse from the wall board. We have the pre-schoolers during this part of the class.

How many in here now understand the difference between their Old Man and their New Man? We are now going to do a craft that will help you remember what happened to your Old Man and made you a New Man.

Hands on craft. We are using Donna’s idea of making a cross out of foam with all the steps on it.

Snack: We made cross shaped cookies.
