Died With Christ

Freddy: Jenny May, have you seen Oogene?

Jenny May: Not in a while, Freddy, why?

Timmy: Because there’s a really cool dead bug over there and I want to show it to him.

Jenny May: That’s gross, Freddy! Dead things are icky!

Freddy: No they’re not!! They’re cool! I’m gonna go find Oogene.

Freddy leaves.

Jenny May talks to herself. Mom walks in and overhears.

Jenny May: Boys are so weird!

Mom: Jenny May, that’s not a nice thing to be saying. What is troubling you?

Jenny May: Freddy just came over looking for Oogene. He wanted to show him a dead bug. That is so gross, Mom. Dead things are creepy!

Mom: Well, yes they can be, honey, but sometimes understanding death can be a good thing.

Jenny May: What do you mean?

Mom: Well, when I think of something dying, I think about Jesus dying on the cross. And then I think about His death, I think about my death too.

Jenny May: But Mom, you’re not dead! You’re right here talking to me!

Mom: Yes Dear. But you see, when Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane preparing to go to the cross, He did something that forever changed the spiritual life for every one who believes in Him.

Jenny May: What did He do?

Mom: He took the sin of man into Himself.

Jenny May: How did He do that?

Mom: Well, He gave an illustration in the Bible and He called it a cup. The cup was filled with the all the sin of man. Jesus was praying to God His Father and asked if it could be God’s will for Him to not have to drink from that cup. But Jesus also knew it was God’s will for Him to drink it.

Jenny May: You mean Jesus didn’t really want to drink it?

Mom: Well, in a way, no. But you see, Jesus knew when He drank from that cup He would be completely separated from God. But Jesus also knew what would happen to us when He did drink the cup of sin.

Jenny May: Did Jesus know it was so God would forgive people of their sins?

Mom: Well, Jenny May, yes, Jesus knew much more than that. Jesus knew that God had chosen Him to be made sin for us, so that we could become righteous before God.

Jenny May: Wow! You mean that Jesus died and was separated from God for me?

Mom: Not just for you, Jenny May, but AS you.

Jenny May: Oh, like I am crucified with Christ! I get it Mom! When Jesus took me into Himself and died on the cross, I died too!

Mom: Yes, dear. Just like being crucified with Christ. When Jesus died spiritually, He took Adam’s death. We were a part of Adam’s seed when we were born as babies, but when we accept Jesus into our hearts, we share in the death of Jesus on the cross and we die to our ancestry of Adam.

Jenny May: Boy Mom, Jesus did a lot for us, huh? I never really thought about what Jesus did so that I could be God’s child.

Mom: The Bible says that God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself. Do you know what reconciling means?

Jenny May: It means something that was separated and then is put back together?

Mom: Exactly right, Jenny May. That was why Jesus drank the cup of sin, or we can also say, the cup of who we were in Adam. Jesus knew He had to be separated from God in order to put us back together with God.

Jenny May: Oh Mom, knowing what Jesus did for me makes me love Him so much more. And I guess I need to apologize to Freddy, huh?

Mom: It wouldn’t hurt dear.

Jenny May: Mom, its cool to be able to talk to you. From now on, when I see a dead bug, I’m gonna remember that I died with Jesus so that I could be reconciled to God. Awesome!
